Whitening Your Smile

Tooth whitening (also known as Tooth Bleaching) in the form of a home kit has been available since about 1986.  This involves the making of a custom fit tray to hold a special whitening gel around each tooth.  It is highly recommended that you have a dentist supervise the whitening process, which includes an examination prior to the treatment, the preparation of the custom tray (as opposed to an off the shelf boil and fit tray) and a dentist provided gel agent (several times stronger than an off the shelf brand). The results are more predictable with a custom tray and the proper gel strength for your individual case.

Whitening should be done under the supervision
of your dentist!

According to the latest Consumer Reports; "Will a drugstore product give you whiter teeth? Five whitening products were tested: Colgate Simply White Night, Crest Night Effects, Colgate Simply White, Crest Whitestrips, and Rembrandt 2-hour White.  NONE of these products received an Excellent rating from the panelists tested.  Whatever the product, most panelists' teeth tended to get somewhat whiter, but not dramatically.  A customized treatment in a dentists' office is likely to yield better results.  The bottom line, according to Consumer Reports, Home kits do whiten teeth for far less than you'd pay for a professional treatment, but we don't know how long any of them will last."

Causes of Tooth Discoloration

Stain build-up on teeth is generally caused by the foods and drinks we consume; such as, coffee, dark teas, dark colored sodas, chocolates, dark wines, and other dark and acidic foods.  Smoking is s major contributor to stained teeth. Other causes include: A.) being born with discolored teeth (often due to medicines taken by mothers during pregnancy), B.) genetics, or C.) childhood diets. Whitening (bleaching the teeth) can lighten the color of your teeth. Generally, whitening will provide the color a patient desires; however, there are times when the desired color cannot be obtained by traditional whitening methods and bonding treatment or veneers will be required to obtain the desired color.

Home Whitening Instructions:
1. Tray worn while sleeping.
2. Thoroughly brush your teeth.
3. Express tooth whitening dosage from syringe into
    the deepest portion of tray.
4. Seat the tray completely and firmly onto your teeth.
5. Gently wipe off excess gel.
6. Rinse mouth thoroughly with water; do not swallow
    rinses.
7. When tray is removed, clean it with cool water and
place into its case. Brush and rinse remaining gel
from teeth. Remove tray prior to eating!
